Climbing to Higher Elevations of Thought
Adult Base Camp
This program for those 18 yrs+ was reintroduced at the Ranches this past summer, reminiscent of a similar program originally initiated by Capp Andrews.
Essentially, it brings everyone together in the morning and evenings to share in the camaraderie and spiritual growth that are such a critical part of camp. Then during the day you head out with program leaders to tackle whatever adventure you have identified (could include fly fishing, mountain or road biking, rock climbing, ropes course, peak climbs, hiking or lake kayaking).
Everyone who attended Adult Base Camp this summer agreed it was a blast and encourage you to sign up for next year! 2011 Adult Base Camp application

Following is an inspirational from Mark James on the true meaning of
Base Camp in his words…
Climbing to Higher Elevations of Thought
We are all on a spiritual journey to climb mountains (solid and grand ideas); an inspired quest. Base camp is a crucial pause in our journey upward. It is a place to acclimate to the higher elevation of thought we have already toiled to achieve. It is a place to prepare for the challenges that still lie ahead. As we pause at base camp, we become accustom to the climate (spiritual environment). We take in our surroundings with anticipation.
Base Camp however is not an end or destination; it is a beginning, a starting point for higher goals and
attainments. Base camp is the beginning of the climb up the mountain; yet base camp is ensconced firmly on the mountain, secure, serene, with inspiring views of spiritual beauty. Base camp is well above where we began our journey in the low lands and has required of us dedication and commitment to reach it.
Base camp is a place to meet up with fellow climbers to regroup, to define goals, to unite in shared strength and purpose. At base camp we laugh, we plan, we organize, we become a team, we become a family. At base camp the outside world fades from thought as we focus single mindedly on the mental preparations required to advance to the spiritual heights of the mountain.
As we pause at base camp we make adjustments, we replenish our supplies, we rest, recharge, re-energize and fortify ourselves to resume the journey. And then we begin the climb knowing that base camp will be there when we return. There will be higher advance camps on our climb where we penetrate the clouds with intensity and receive exalted views, but we don’t linger long at those heights; whether we reach our highest goal or not we return with eagerness and quiet resolve to base camp.
The return to base camp is again a time to pause, to rejoice in our achievements and to express gratitude for the challenges we faced, endured and won. It is a place and opportunity to share with others all that we experienced on the mountain and to pass on helpful ideas about the route and the journey. Base camp is the foundation of our spiritual journey; it is a beloved place of the heart to which we come and from which we go; it is “Home” the place to which we forever return.
