Jeni and I took a few minutes recently to ask ourselves what it has meant to be able to give our time, treasure and talent to Adventure Unlimited – what is it that got us going, kept us going and has us excited for this year of service to the organization?
MoreThere are snow showers some days, other days sunshine and warmth to melt it away. Most of the country enjoys joyful peeks at spring in between leftover patches of winter. Now it is the in-between time, when we begin to think about warmer days, adventures ahead of us, perhaps recalling memories of backpacking trips, paddling on the river or riding horses to campsites high in the evergreens.
MoreWhat’s it like to be an adult at a DiscoveryBound (DB) Outreach weekend event? “It was a wonderful and uplifting experience,” one adult participant says. “I never once felt left out of my group due to my age. People were bringing me outside of my comfort zone.”
MoreLong before she became a parent, Jessica Dees was looking out for her Sunday School students. “Middle school is a great time for them to know that there are other Christian Scientists around,” says Jessica, who has volunteered as a DiscoveryBound (DB) Outreach chapter worker in Jacksonville, Florida for the last 15 years.
MoreThe first of four summer experiences for a teen in DiscoveryBound’s National Leadership Council (NLC) is a two-week outdoor adventure orientation. It’s an environment that brings together the two newest classes in person and kicks off their journey as a family. During their orientation last summer, the classes had an opportunity to rise up in support of one another when faced with a health challenge.
MoreSo there I was, on a busy street in a strange city, with five hours to round up a whole range of stuff from all over town with four other teenagers I only sort of knew. And it was one of the best and most meaningful days of my life.
MoreWhat do millennials want in a CS community, and what role should Adventure Unlimited play in fostering connections? “We’ve provided some activities for this age group, but we want to better understand what resonates with them,” says Kynan Witters Hicks. “It’s clear that a different approach is needed to appeal to this group from what our programs offer kids/teens and 40s+ adults.”
MoreOur alumni group chose Catalina Island as a volunteer project because we wanted to learn more about the significance and principles of ecological preservation – a topic often discussed on the news and in politics. The trip also provided a special opportunity to connect with each other as students of Christian Science.
